I very highly doubt if this is a remake of Closer. Yes, some elements (strictly from the trailers) like Abhishek doing a Clive Owenesque shouting about on Rani did set me thinking on that track but one look at the synopsis on the film’s official website and this just really seems a Silsila remade. Will watch it FDFS to still see what all the brouhaha about this “KJo’s first bold film” is.

In any case, Closer wasn’t all that groundbreaking either. Remaking a depressing film like that where all couples do is manipulate and swear at each other would spell doom for any Bollywood movie.

How can you say SRK is the best in bollywood even today?

Aren’t you overlooking someone named Amitabh Bachan?

What is with SRK and that “I am Atlas personified, lifting all the earth with my hands” way of singing/standing that accompanies EACH AND EVERY one of his films?

From the trailers all I see is excess make-up on everybody, cliched over-the-top performances and nobody’s acting really seems to be working. That’s just from the trailer.

In the end, I think KANK and “stank” will go together.

btw, rani ditches srk in the end and goes back to abhi, while srk ditches priety and moves on. yawnnnnnnnnn……………

I watched this movie at a premier show in Nepal and I must say it is a lousy piece of work. Taran Adarsh has certainly put whatever credibility he had on line by going out of his way to praise this let-down movie. The movie is too long, the screenplay is very weak, the narration of the story is very poorly handled and most of the sequence in the movie are very inconsequential. The worst performance comes out of SRK who really struggles in the movie when it comes to bringing out emotions and this movie was supposed to be FULL of emotions. AB does stand out but the jokes in the movie are cheap, lack imagination and are an unsult to the IQ of the average movie goers. My advice will be that if you can, avoid this movie and go for something that may have used better imagination in making the movie.

hey i watched this movie yesterday, cudn’t believe that actually i was seeing all the crap that ive seen, may b million times.
i thought this year was goin gud 4 bollywood till nw. i was expecting smthin gud frm this team. as far as performances r concern, everybody in the movie did over-d-top acting. SRK is highly predictable, so as amitabh bachan. I’ve been sayin this,

As much as I hated every bit of this movie…I know still that there are some people out there who loved this movie and thats really something many of us will not be able to accept.
Its one thing to say a movie is crap or boring….I personally disliked it more because its a dishonest art work…….Karan Johar just wanted to make a point that some people “click” and some people dont and when they click then there is an “akashwani”….which is complete bullshit….I dont say that infidelity is not present in this world…but then its the first time I have seen someone almost advocating it (granted he said in the end that it would have been better if they had not broken so many hearts and blah blah)….coming to the point…..I would have been alright if Karan Johar believed in what he was advocating and then honestly presented it…..its very simple to change the sequence of events , manipulate them and then put an “aaaaaaaa” music in the background to differentiate between “true love” and just a marriage…….I think anyone can love anyone…its just a matter of knowing someone better…..and thats human and natural by the way Mr. Karan Johar……anyhow…having said that I think it also happens that a person falls for someone else after he is married…..but there is no reason to justify it after the cause of a bad relationship is the person himself….in this movie it was clearly Rani and SRK….by the way SRK is a pathetic actor…really…..someone asked him to play a completely pissed off down trodden person and he keeps his teeth clinched the ENTIRE movie….someone please ask him to understand the concept of acting……..the plot was meaningless……greatly manipulated……overall…..Mr.Karan Johar I must say people like you should never be allowed to present art works……I remember a movie “Vanilla Sky” at this moment….all the characters in the movie were wrong and right at different instants….but NOTHING was being justified in the entire movie…director wanted to show colours of human nature…and he did so…honestly….thats the thing

I found this movie very entertaining. Good acting by all. It is made in ‘bollywood style”. If you dont like bollywood then dont go for this movie. go and watch American movies.

I thought Abhishek was really gd in the movie. Preity was ok but hardly there. Rani was fine. Srk was gd but somehow, this time round, i didnt see his usual charisma. Something was evidently missing. I understood the story line. I understood what Karan was trying to convey.
but the biggest problem is tht i couldnt sympathise with any of the characters except for Abhishek n tht too only a small extent.
It’s not because of the acting. they acted fine but the story of srk and rani was not developed well enough for the audience to fall in love with and sympathise with the characters.
Yes, i understand Karan was trying to say that the 2 couples were just not meant to be but i was not convinced enough.
Srk seemed soo insecure right from the start. his cynicism was getting on my nerves at times. Rani was never sure abt her marriage frm the start. why the hell did she marry? there are some parts which were not developed. the comedy in between were funny alright but it tend to become quite slapstick.
Especially srk-rani’s love story. their r/shp seemed more out of convenience than love.

it’s not the theme that karan picked which is wrong. But his approach lacks the conviction.

Songs were great though. tht’s the only redeeming factor in the movie. though i found where’s the party tonight quite out of the blue. oh ya settings were lavish. Rani Preity looked amazing. tht’s the plus points.

• Are you endorsing infidelity with Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (KANK)?

An angry mother came up to me after seeing the film. ‘My daughter recently got divorced. I took her out to see a Karan Johar film to cheer her up. But look at what you made her go through!’ She was upset. But I think I had made a point. I don’t claim to be an expert on marriage nor am I endorsing anything. KANK is my take on what happens when people get married for the wrong reason. The true foundation of an enduring marriage is love. If that love isn’t there, things can go wrong at any time in a marriage. That’s what happens in KANK. You don’t have to agree with what the characters do or say.

• People are reacting vehemently to the Shah Rukh-Rani extra-marital affair.

Every married person sees a bit of him or herself in these characters. KANK is like watching an experience rather than watching a film. Everyone wants to know why Rani doesn’t love Abhishek’s character. But she doesn’t! I can point to a dozen marriages where the perfect spouse leaves their partner. There’re million of women who continue to be miserable in passionless marriages. I’m not advocating women to have an affair. But you don’t need to be in a loveless marriage. That’s what KANK says.

• Surely there’re obligations in a marriage that go beyond self-gratification?

I agree. But children shouldn’t be made an excuse to keep a dead marriage going. Preity says, ‘I’m not one of those who accept defeat in life by making children their weakness. I’m not that weak’.

A Karan Johar film influences a large section of people.

And I haven’t been irresponsible towards my audience. The message, if any, is marry for the right reason. And if you’re in a miserable marriage you’re doing wrong to two people. Incomplete relationships are of no value to anyone. I’d love our women to become more independent and career-minded so that they could have a life of their own even after a broken marriage. Yes, sometimes people tie the knot succumbing to parental or age pressure. Please… treat marriage as a venerable institution which you visit only when you’re sure of yourself.

• But you are unmarried. So how do you know the dos and don’ts of marriages?

I’m not married. But I’m an observer of human relationships. And it’s my right to use those observations as and how I wish. I know there will be various debates and discussions on KANK and I welcome them.

• One gets to see a lot of Yash Chopra’s Silsila in KANK.

Where? Not consciously. I love Silsila. It’s a super take on the cult of infidelity. But I think KANK tells its own story.

• What was the need for the characters of Kajol, Arjun Rampal, John Abraham and Riteish Deshmukh (who was finally cut out)?

Kajol is my lucky mascot. Arjun is an important character. He was someone Preity’s character could’ve settled down with after her failed marriage. But she chose not to. John was the fun thing, why not have a good-looking DJ? As for Riteish there was an entire chunk with Rani in playschool which had to be cut off. Stars are important to a film. But you must understand I took a big risk by casting these stars against their images. Earlier I made good-looking film with white characters. Now it’s good-looking with grey characters. Both Shah Rukh and Rani are flawed protagonists.

• Why have you cast Shah Rukh as a cynical and bitter man?

He’s unhappy because of his failures. When I projected him as the ebullient Rahul and Aman in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Kal Ho Na Ho everyone said he needed an image change. I’m going to get very upset if people complain now about his change of image. What do you want me to do?

• How do you justify Mr Bachchan’s character in the film?

Abhishek’s father in the film is a flamboyant character. And who would be better equipped than Mr Bachchan to play the role? He’ll be called ‘Sexy Sam’ for a long time. He trusted that I’d handle his raunchy role with a certain class and dignity. Mr Bachchan rocks at 64. Why do we have to show him as a humble patriarch or a retired don? In real life, he wears the coolest clothes and listens to the coolest music. KANK taps his cool side.

• Can you ever go back to candyfloss?

I can’t! I’ve matured. I’ve changed. At 25, I made Kuch Kuch Hota Hai because I felt mushy. At 29, I did Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham because I felt reverent towards my parents. At 31, when I wrote Kal Ho Na Ho it was a manifestation of my fear of death. I felt I was going to lose someone dear, and I did (father Yash Johar). At 34 I’m a silent observer, that’s why I’ve made KANK.

This film is one of the worst film I have seen. There is no comedey in the film, no thril, no suspense. There is no moral of film. Karan johar has gone mad. He thinks whatever he make people will grab. He is tottaly wrong. This film will be his biggest flop. Dont go for any critic who admires this film.If any one admires this bakwas film, he is paid critic from Karan Johar. I was going sleepy in film in just 30 minutes, but there was no AC in cinema hall, so I could not. Dont go for this film, there is no story in this film. Save your money, time and protect your charactor.

it was a stupid movie, made by a person lacking depth,. no problem with the subject, but you need to have that level of sensitivity and talent to handle such issues. mr. johar, seroious subjects are not handled during weekend parties with mutual admiration groups spending papa dear’s hard earned money. probebly your overconfidance is forcing you to make arrogant comparisons with yash chopra. dear, it takes a life time to become a yash chopra or others of their league. by the way what was your budget for financing the critics.

Well what can I say about this movie. Too start with I love all Karan Johar movies, I think they are very good and different. All KJ movies are very meaningful and great. Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna was excellent film I thought not many people like it but I really

like it. I though all the cast in the film great job aspecially Amitabh and Abhishake they where the best in there.

The best part of the film was:

*When Abhi [Rishi] found out that Rani [Maya] his wife was having a affair with Dav [shahrukh]. It was very touching screen when he tell how he love her and how she could do that do him.

*When Amitjee [Sam] was flirting with Dav mum on his birthday party it was very funny.

*When Rani and Shahrukh was trying make effect with there partner that was funny part. When Rani come home with sexy outfit and blind flond when she was trying studuce Abhi that was funny eveyone was there. Back at Shahrukh house when he trying suduce Pretty and put all face pack atound face that was funny as well

*When Rishi and Rhea made effect with the other half that was sweet. I think thats what Dev and Maya should done instead off falling love with each other.

The worse part of the film was:

*When Dav and Maya slept together, I though that was nessary to show in the movie it could been done with out.

*When Rhea told Dav she was the bread winner in the house, I thought that was instenive of her say that. She should more sentive about the issue because Dav had broken leg and he couldn’t work any more but it was true.

*When Rishi had told Maya when was last time they had spend time together and slept and all here his kid. That screen was bit hash, you see understand it

Bascially the first half was very funny and second half very intense. The only thing I was dispointed was when Dav and Maya got together I wanted Dav stay with Rhea and Maya say with Rishi this at the ended. But the whole film was realy great, I wouldn’t recommeded wathing with your family as not family film it more for couples Movies…..

It was a fuckin most useless movie I have ever seen. Shah Rukh is fuckin getting old and soon will be doing father roles. I think he will be better off acting in the indian shows on tv.

An overtly self indulgent movie with Karan Johars take on relationships who gives his version of what relationships are. People in India are far happy to have well mannered spouses rather than go hunt for the zing thing. Can he ever attempt to make a movie about the ordinary person and their trial and tribulations. Unfortunately the Karan-SRK nexus is basking under the success of a very average movie thanks to brain dead people like me who watched it despite warnings.

He wants to take a grey movie , then genuinely attempt one, this is not grey this is selfishness

Ok…I can understand why some people don’t like the film. But I completely loved it! It was on a mature issue, sensitively handled. The love scenes were sweet without making you cringe. And people, SRK HAD to be portayed as a cynic, (a far cry from lover-boy) that was the whole purpose! It showed people who were real, not merely goody-goodies, and that’s what life’s about. Flaws…nothing and no one is perfect, and that’s what Karan tried to show. I completely agree with Taran Adarsh. I think this is what happens with every good movie, people try to pull it down, but yet it goes and becomes a huge hit. Each of Karan’s movies have been criticized (and probably will continue to be), but that shouldn’t stop him from making sensitive movies like this one…because frankly KANK rocks!!

KANK is an amazing movie!
The basic thing is that the moral police is not willing to let go of the fact that extra-marital affairs have been potrayed as ‘Not Bad’ in the movie. After all Rani and Sharukh fall In love even when their respective spouses love them. See that is why this movie breaks stereotypes. Sometimes you connect, sometimes you don’t. It isn’t telling you to go out and pretend to be single if you’re angry at your spouse. It’s just that…life is about second chances…and the climax is simply amazing and definitely not cliched!
Kudos to Taran Adarsh for a well written review! And to Karan for a marvellous film!

Yessss! I loved KANK too. A brilliant movie and one of Johar’s best! Peope shud stop targetting Shahrukh, Rani and he look amazing in the movie!

I’ll admit that I’ve never been a great Sharukh fan. I’ve always thought he’s too plastic and can’t act different. But KANK has made my views take a 180 degree turn. He’s mindblowing as cynical, resentful Dev Saran!! His character is not justified, which makes the movie pleasant, as other directors mostly keep looking for reasons to justify any bad acts done by their main protagonists. He’s not even close to perfect and that makes him human. He’s rude, has practically no sense of humor, doesn’t know how to talk and yet….this is one role in which Sharukh completely shines! Well i dont mean to dominate wat other people has said. But frankly if we stays back or dont want to accept the truth then wat to say. KANK is based on the fact. Its very hard to digest if someones is giving the fact bcoz people have the habits of digesting fake. Thats wat has happened when they saw KANK. It is beutiful and wonderful movie. Whatever others say kabhi alvida na kehna is a good movie…i really dont know why people are ready to accept reality…this movie has shown the real side of life….and this is happening in dis world…and each one of us knw it….i would like to say to all of u, thoose who has not seen dis movie, dat u should watch dis movie

i m a very big fan of the KING KHAN SHAHRUKH KHAN and i think he is the best actor in the world.one of u said that SHAHRUKH KHAN is going 2 play father’s role next time ,if sanjay dutt, sunny deol,anil kapoor r still heros then how can shahrukh khan play a fathers role? and i would also like to inform those ppl who r passing bad comments on the film kank ,that it has hit the overseas records!.only those can understand the meaning of this movie who think positively in life and feel the real facts of life.one of u is playing a double role, on one hand he is saying that kank is a good movie and on the other he says that kank is a worst movie i dont want to recall his name he must clear up his mind.dont say such bad words to this movie ,in this way u all r introducing ur own character. at last i would like to thank those who understood this movie and liked it.they r the person who take everything positively in life . SHAHRUKH KHAN was great in this film LONG LIVE SRK (KING KHAN)!……….AND HE HAS PROVED THAT HE IS THE BEST ACTOR!…..

Its a piece of crap…SRK has completely ruined his reputation..what was he THINKING when he was told about the script? and amitabh B was a complete WASTE

baby B’s acting was ok…some comic moments from SRK were ok…but overall the whole film was a complete waste..guys PLEASE do ureself a favour and DO NOT WATCH this film…

KANK is made by a director who is just using is father’s money to make crap movie.

KANK is be forgetable.

KANK will be laughed at the Toronto Film Festival, especially the ending where shah ru khan is on the train and then he comes off. And Rani is wearing a pink sari running around the train station.

The occupancy at the multiplexes was around 40%-50% during weekends, but it fell considerably on weekdays [25% to 35%]. Its business at single screens as also at smaller centres continues to be low-key.

Big deal anyone can do that — pay big money to stars to play in your movie and put lots of posters and sucker the audience. But audience will know next time not to see any of your new movies.
