Movie Review : Omkara
UPDATE: Click here to read the film reviews of Omkara.Update: 07/03/2007
Bollywood is buzzing these days with promos of the new movie Omkara directed by Vishal Bharadwaj. Yes, he is the same guy who directed Shakespeare’s Hindi adaptation of Macbeth, a.k.a Maqbool. Maqbool was a great adaptation, after which Vishal Bharadwaj set out to adapt another Shakespeare classic – Othello. Hence the name – Omkara – suitably indianized you could say.

However a quick blog search revealed that not too many in the desi blogosphere seem excited about this movie. Yet. I am sure things should start changing once the release dates loom nearer, but unlike Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna which has gathered enough momentum, Omkara seems to be lagging behind. Of course the fact that it does not boast of a stellar star-cast could be another reason.
I mean who wants to see Vivek Oberoi, Konkona Sen Sharma or Kareena Kapoor, or even the dirty-teeth Ajay Devgan?
Anyhow, there are at least some people who are talking about the movie though.
The Grumpy Old Man has a post on this movie, and observes that Ajay Devgan has flexed his muscles and gone the Salman Khan way of barring his shirt. Ajay Devgan has worked hard for this role it seems, but will someone tell him to brush his teeth every once in a while? May be he has been working a trifle too hard to get the UP don look right.
Neha is excited as well about Omkara – and is bothered about Vivek Oberoi in the movie. I share her botheration - Vivek Oberoi hasn’t exactly set the screen on fire after his much acclaimed “I did 2 months research on my role in Company” role. Sadly Vivek hasn’t put that much research in any of his further movies. Says Neha:
The only part of the star cast that bothers me is Vivek Oberoi as Cassio. After Company he has not proven himself in a really good role, so there is a question mark on his casting. Though he might bring a certain level of guilability and naiveness to the character of Cassio.
Move over to thelana where she hosts some of the screenshots of the movie. I can tell that she is clearly the most excited one about the movie. I loved her second comment though, and what is a pretty neat observation:
I’m all “OMG, Ajay and Vivek were in company together! And Ajay, Vivek and Kareena were in Yuva together. And Ajay and Bipasha were a couple in Aparahan! And Saif and Kareena were a couple in LOC!” LOL
Endingly, you can find more posts about Omkara here, here, and its office site here.
Omkara is definitely on my MUST-SEE movie lists for this year. Will do another round up in a few days. Meanwhile, if you have thoughts on this movie, speak up!
Update: Popcorns.org also has a article about this movie and the roles the respective star cast is playing.
